When you create a new Takeoff in STACK, you'll choose a Takeoff Measurement Type. The Takeoff Measurement Type determines the measurement output(s) for the takeoff - square foot, linear foot, count, cubic yard, etc. - so it is important to choose the right Takeoff Measurement Type for the type of material/item you want to measure/count.

There are nine Takeoff Measurement Types from which to choose:

  • Area
  • Linear
  • Count
  • Linear with Drop
  • Pitched Area
  • Pitched Linear
  • Surface Area
  • Volume 2D
  • Volume 3D

To help you make the right choice, the table below provides examples of what you can measure, the measurement outputs,* formula variables, and the Change Takeoff options for each Takeoff Measurement Type.

*Most Takeoff Measurement Types output a primary and secondary measurement(s). For example, the Area Takeoff Measurement Type will yield the square footage and the linear footage of the perimeter. The Volume 3D Takeoff Measurement Type will yield the cubic yardage, square footage, and linear footage of the perimeter.

* You must use the rectangle tool when measuring to get the Secondary Outputs of Linear Footage for width and height and to be able to use the [MeasuredHeight] and [MeasuredWidth] formula variables.

NOTE: If you happen to choose the wrong Takeoff Measurement Type, you can use the Change Takeoff tool to assign the measurement(s) to a different takeoff that has a Takeoff Measurement Type listed in the Change Takeoff Options column in the table above. For example, you can change a takeoff with a Pitched Area Takeoff Measurement Type to a takeoff with an Area or Volume 2D Takeoff Measurement Type.

TIP: When measuring a roof, you need to use an aerial (floor plan) view, NOT an elevation view.
